WHY SHAKESPEARE IS RELEVANT TODAY

BY SONIKA SINGH

Porter asked, “ Knock! Knock! Who is there?
Reply – “ It is April the twenty-third, English language Day is celebrated here!
A tribute to Shakespeare -the greatest bard of all times,
Whose creative genius cannot be expressed in words and lines.”

For 400 years, he has been lying peacefully in his grave.
Is very relevant today, and for many of us, a big craze!
He was a neologist who has 1700 words to his credit,
He played with grammar, and the use of the prefix ‘un’ was one of his merit.

The word gossip – is a gift from his character Solinus, the Duke
Shakespeare coined words like – assassination, majesty, critic, and puke
It is the greatest honour and privilege to read his sonnest and poetry,
Every playwright follow his FIVE Act structure in plays in totality,
Appearance & reality; order& disorder; change &conflict are themes dearest to his heart.
Every literary piece of his is the epitome of both intellect and art.

The female characters in his plays were the precursors of the current feminists,
The witty Beatrice, the courageous Cornelia, sharp Portia, all had their share of benefits.
He weaved the various hues of human nature with subtlety like a tapestry,
Jealous Othello, ruthless Richard II, conceited Lear, thoughtful Hamlet question mortality.

Ben Johnson had remarked- Shakespeare is the Soul of the Age! The applause, delight, the wonder of our stage!”
We, so many years later, still say – He is timeless; he does not belong to any era or age!

HAPPY ENGLISH LANGUAGE DAY!
