MY BEST FRIEND
BY SONIKA SINGH
It’s time for my nephew’s poetry recitation competition at school and he calls me saying, ” Bua! Could you compose one poem for me?”
So this is a very simple poem for early readers celebrating the friendship between Trees and Man. Interstingly, a little boy of ten understands that the existence of trees decides the fate and the future of Mankind. But Alas! The adults have failed in their attempt to keep the planet clean and green.
Meet my best friend- He is a tree.
He gives me everything for free.
He gives us air so clean,
Make the surroundings so green.
He gives us fruits to eat.
Under its shade with our friends, we meet
He gives us pretty flowers.
More trees bring more rain showers!
It provides wood to build my house,
Sometimes I play with my friends in the tree house.
My friend gives us oxygen so that we can survive,
Some of the trees are considered divine.
My tree stores carbon and stabilises soil.
It gives us resins, rubber, and oil.
In the company of my best friend -the tree,
Everyone becomes stress-free.
Tree is a home for birds, squirrels, and bees,
So never cut trees, please!
If I a boy of ten can understand that tree is Man’s best friend
I wonder why adults cut trees and can’t comprehend ?
Although much is lost but still we can do some amend,
Let’s grow more trees is what I recommend.
