WHAT THEY TAUGHT ME....

BY SONIKA SINGH

In the summer of 1993, that I took my first job as a teacher. In this lovely span of 30 years, I have learnt so much from my students. This poem is dedicated to my every student whom I taught. Each one of you is unique and has taught me so much.

A young girl of 21 entered a well-established school of name and fame,
To make a difference in the lives of her students was her aim.
She faced her interviewer- a gentleman probably 40 years her senior.
He remarked, ‘’ You are so young and short, how will you control such a big class?
The girl replied, ‘’ Napoleon too, was short, he conquered the world, I only have to conquer hearts.”

The interviewer remarked “The job is yours, Hope you accomplish your goal,
“Counsellor, guide, friend, task master all in one is the teacher’s role ‘’.
Thirty beautiful, years have passed since that day,
Many lessons I have learnt from my students on the way.

Persistence, passion, and patience make a good teacher,
Teachers too, must practice first and not become a preacher.
Respect is always commanded not demanded is what every teacher must know,
Keep abreast with times, learn continuously or you will cease to grow.

Don’t be an egoist, never hesitate to apologise when you are wrong,
After all, teacher too is a student, and Learning is a process life long.
Love which a teacher begets from her students is a blessing,
But she must be approachable and accepting.

The most precious lesson that I have learnt of all,
To follow it is probably an order very tall.
If you want your students to change, first yourself be the change,
Students don’t want critics but role models they love to imitate.
